With the writer's strike - which I will admit I haven't noticed that much since I don't watch a whole lot of T.V. to begin with and the fact that I need to do something else other than just play the Sims2 and read fanfic - I broke out my Babylon 5 unopened boxsets. I had never really seen much of the first season. An episode here, a snippet there. I wasn't all that fond of Sinclair and I think that colored my viewing pleasure. And I skipped most of the fifth season - without a few key characters it just wasn't the same.

So I am watching it now. The first season was better than I expected. Sinclair wasn't bad I just like Sheridan a lot more. I like looking back at it and seeing all of the set up for the later seasons. JMS really knew what he was doing and I have to really respect that. The Second Season was really strong but the third season just blew that all out of the water. That season really is the pinnacle of the series -which is really sad considering that there are two seasons to go. I am about a fourth of the way through the fourth season and I can feel my heart dropping. I know what is going to happen to a few characters and I am not looking forward to watching that.

But I look at Babylon 5 and think that this is really how Television should be. Strong with over-arching plots but not so interconnected that you have to watch from the beginning or be lost. I feel that way about Heroes and Lost that at this point I would like to watch the shows but every time I try I feel lost - where as with B5 I came in late in the second season as a real fan and I still didn't feel confused. I did the same with Buffy. The other thing about B5 is that it is massively quotable. For Example: "It's like I've always said, 'You get more with a kind word and a a two by four, than just a kind word.'" and "If you value your lives; be somewhere else!" Excellent! Sorry smiling gleefully just remembering those scenes.

The other thing I like about B5 were that some of the non-arc episodes are really true gems. For example: "Passing through Gethesemene" is probably one of the most beautiful pieces of television out there - right up there with "The Body" from Buffy. It makes me cry every time I watch it. And most of the episode focusses on a one-off character. It is just lovely.

B5 also had two romantic arcs in it that captured my attention - one joyful and the other tragic. It is the tragic one that makes me so upset and is part of the reason why I am dreading the end of season four. But I still love the pairing in my Icon enough that I read a lot of fanfic for it in my time. There are also a few homoerotic pairing potentials in there - to the point that even the actors make commentary on it. I like it. ^_^

Anyway. Back to my B5-a-thon.
