I think I've figured out why I've been hunting down some pieces of music I normally don't go for, the classical pieces especially.

I'm moving out of my house permanently come May and out of state entirely to someplace I know only peripherally. I was born in Colorado lived there for ten years before I moved to Michigan. I have lived in the same house for fifteen years and it is hard to leave it. Most of my family is in Michigan or Illinois. And it is going to be hard to leave them.

Like most people, there are certain things that trigger memory (Smells and sounds being the most effective). Well many of my memories have Music attached to them. I remember standing on my back porch at night watching a thunderstorm come over the mountains. I often did this, but one time my parent's put on Tchaikovsky's 1812 overture on the Reel-to-Reel player and I conducted the storm. I was all of seven. But I can picture the setting as clearly as if it happened yesterday. Because I can hear the music.

Beethoven's Sixth symphony has so many memories attached to it. Seeing Fantasia. Playing with my friends Lisa and Jana growing up. Driving through the mountains on I-70 heading to Breckenridge. Going to Disneyworld when I was seven. With the different movements I see different things.

The strains of the New Age group Secret Garden remind me of New Zealand and sitting in a sidewalk cafe having dinner and talking with my mother while we watched the sun go down over Lake Taupo. It was so beautiful. And in the background the restaurant was playing Secret Garden.

The indie female rock is more of me trying to remember the few good times I had in High School and my first years in college.

Smells don't do much for me -- But Music and sounds are what I remember and my memories are etched between the notes.
