Oscar Night
Mar. 25th, 2002 01:26 amWell I don't know how I feel. Most of the winners I had no issue with. Yes, I would have liked to have seen "Lord of the Rings" win Best Director and Best Picture, but I can concede that Ron Howard and "A Beautiful Mind" are deserving.
The two categories I did have issue with were Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. I really think either Ben Kingsley or Ian McKellan should have won the latter category. And Either Tom Wilkinson or Russell Crowe should have won Best Actor. Tom Wilkinson carried "In the Bedroom" and Russell Crowe proved he was an actor with this film. He shouldn't have won for Gladiator last year, but this year he was brilliant. And I hate Russell Crowe about as much as I hate Leonardo DiCaprio.
As for the "Lord of the Rings" I knew it wasn't going to win. My father says one of the trilogy will win later -- but I doubt it. This movie I fear will suffer from what I call the "Star Wars Effect." Star Wars was a great movie and was nominated for 10 Oscars(winning 7 in technical, art, and musical categories), Empire was nominated for 7 (winning 3) and Jedi was nominated for 3 (winning none.) Star Wars was the only one of the Trilogy that received an Actor(Supporting for Guinness) director, and Picture nod. Even though Empire was a better film overall and Jedi was much better edited. The first film of a series historically has been nominated for more and better quality of awards than its sequels . Which doesn't bode well for "The Twin Towers" and "The Return of the King."
But I seriously think Peter Jackson SHOULD have a best director Oscar. He did something no other filmmaker has done, he shot all three films at one time. That is a daunting task, and he deserves some recognition for that.
Oh and did anyone else notice that Halle Berry thanked all these people but neglected to recognized her co-star Billy Bob Thornton. One has to wonder if it was Deliberate.
Also did anyone also notice that the only animated features nominated were Digitally done and all were from the US. I have to wonder where Final Fantasy and other Japanese based films are.
