My Card

He returned to consciousness reluctantly. He felt cold. Hungry. Alone. Opening his eyes he looked around the opulent surroundings taking in the velvet curtained bed, the tapestries on the walls, the fire burning in the fireplace. The flickering flames did little to warm the room and the man slipped from the bed pulling the velvet coverlet with him. He walked toward the hearth and extended his hands toward the fire. He felt nothing.

"The fire will not help you," a woman's voice came from behind him.

He whirled toward the voice and found a beautiful blond woman looking back at him with an amused expression on her pale face. "Why not?"

She didn't answer but instead asked another question. "You are cold are you not?"

"Yes. You haven't answered me."

She continued to ignore him. "I imagine that you are hungry as well."

He narrowed his eyes. "I am. You seem to know quite a lot about how I feel."

"Aye, that I do." She smiled ironically. "I have been in your place myself many, many years ago. The first night is always the most difficult." There was sympathy in her wine colored eyes.

Her eyes sparked a memory and he remembered where he had seen them before. People were dancing, drinking, doing all of the things he did not wish to partake in. Then he spotted her across the room, she stood out among all of the rabble in the room in her red and black brocade dress. "You're the woman from that night."

She smiled. "I am."

He looked around. "Where am I? Why am I here?"

"I presumed you would prefer this to a graveyard and clawing your way out of your coffin. Was I wrong?"

"No," he said shaking his head. "You were not. So I am a vampire."

She smiled wider revealing her fangs. "So now he understands. From our conversation last night, I assumed this is what you wanted."

More and more memories returned to him, memories of blood and pain. He looked down at his hands and flexed them slowly. "It was. It is."

"Good. I hate to squander this gift on those who do not appreciate it. So what do you intend to do now?"

He felt a feral grin cross his lips. "Kill my prey."
